P & L Manufacturing Ltd has been producing coffins, caskets and all manner of wooden sundries at a small industrial development on the borders of Gloucestershire and Worcestershire since 1999.
Pearce & Leighton, or P & L as it is known was created over a cup of coffee at a kitchen table, Derek Leighton had been made redundant from the local coffin manufacturers’ and was helping out John Pearce in his bespoke kitchen business.
Within six weeks a suitable unit had been found at the new industrial site at Mitre Farm, Corse Lawn and on 1st April 1999 together with two employees and Fred Leighton, recalled from retirement to visit prospective customers, work started to create a coffin manufacturing plant within an empty shell.
Now in its nineteenth year P & L Manufacturing is still growing with twenty-one employees, as well as Derek and Sally working full time, and has expanded into a further three units at Mitre Farm. Sally has now been joined in the office by Sally Smith and Mark Ide is taking on the day to day running of the factory alongside Derek.
A moulding plant had been installed to allow more control over the quality and quantity of mouldings needed for the coffin production. This has resulted in more wood waste being produced and so a biomass boiler has been installed, this was a big outlay in 2016/2017 but as a result our waste to landfill has now virtually been eliminated and we will have a warm work area in the winter without the need of fossil fuels.
Derek says, “The aim at the start of production was to supply a traditional high quality product to funeral directors, but also not being rigid to our own specification. We are sure that our customers will agree that the flexibility we have in the production line enables us to produce a product that they wish to supply”.
P & L do not provide a nationwide delivery service but but either Sally will always be happy to discuss whether deliveries are possible to new areas.
